Summer School

In 2010, ThinkSwiss offers travel grants to U.S. participants of six Swiss Summer Schools:

• EPFL Lausanne, School of Life Sciences Summer Research Scholar Program 2010
• University of Zurich and ETH Zurich, Biology Undergraduate Summer School (BUSS) 2010
• University of Basel, Institute of Nursing Science 2010 Summer School - Systematic Reviews, Meta-Analysis / Meta-Synthesis
• University of Bern, NCCR Climate Summer School 2010 - Adaptation and Mitigation: Responses to Climate Change
• EPFL Lausanne, Architecture Section Summer School 2010 - Desperate Houses
• Accademia di architettura Mendrisio, Architecture Summer Schhol 2010 - Environmentally Responsive Building Envelopes

The participants will benefit from hands-on research, training and exposure to cutting-edge issues within a professional research community. Awardees of the travel grants will be asked to share their experiences by contributing to the ThinkSwiss Brainstorm Blog.

The selection of all participants is done by each summer school. Please apply directly to the individual program.

EPFL Lausanne, School of Life Sciences: Summer Research Scholar Program 2010
The Life Sciences summer research program, organized at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), offers intensive research training opportunities to talented undergraduate students ïnterested in research careers in the life sciences. lt provides the participants with unique opportunities for hands-on laboratory research experience under the supervision of distinguished faculty/researchers and also seeks to enrich the participants experience outside the laboratory through their participation in a series of seminars (e.g. ethics, planning a scientific career), social activities, and informal interactions with members of the scientific community at the EPFL.

University of Zurich and ETH Zurich: Biology Undergraduate Summer School (BUSS) 2010
The Zurich Biology Undergraduate Summer School (BUSS) is a joint initiative of the University of Zurich (UZH) and ETH Zurich (ETHZ). This 9-week international program gives undergraduate students in the life sciences the chance to perform a significant research project in one of the participating laboratories of UZH or ETHZ. Thanks to the intense curriculum of the BUSS, participating students not only become familiar with laboratory methods and theoretical principles, but also gain skills in scientific reasoning and scientific communication.

University of Basel, Institute of Nursing Science: 2010 Summer School - Systematic Reviews, Meta-Analysis / Meta-Synthesis
This course offers an opportunity for doctoral students and training fellows to focus on the value of and methods utilized in conducting systematic reviews and meta-analysis or meta-synthesis. Course participants will be introduced to guidelines for conducting and reporting a systematic review of the literature and, based on their individual interests, the analytic methods utilized in meta-analysis or meta-synthesis and the interpretation and reporting of the results of the analyses.

The NCCR Climate, Switzerland's centre of excellence in climate and climate impact research, invites young scientists to join leading climate researchers in a scenic southern Swiss Alpine setting for keynote lectures, workshops and poster sessions on the occasion of the 9th NCCR Climate Summer School 2010. The topics covered at the NCCR Climate Summer School 2010 will include:
• Emission scenarios and the future of the global climate
• Economics of climate change: an overview
• Assessing costs and benefits of climate change

EPFL Lausanne, Architecture Section: Summer School 2010 - Desperate Houses
This summer school deals with the future of urban agglomerations in peripheral zones, which are dominated by single-family homes and have a very low density. The single-family home is still seen as the ideal place to live for a majority of city dwellers despite the fact that they contradict the principles of sustainability, which demand a densification and seek to stop urban sprawl. The summer school addresses this problem in the form of theoretical courses and practical workshops. The goal is to elaborate propositions for the densification of an existing residential area close to Lausanne. The school is co-organised by the Association of Assistants at the Architecture Section of EPFL  Lausanne and mid-level faculty of selected U.S. universities.

Accademia di architettura Mendrisio, Architecture Summer Schhol 2010 - Environmentally Responsive Building Envelopes
The main ecological goal in architecture today is to reduce to a minimum – ideally to zero – the total primary energy needs of a building (i.e. the energy consumption for heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting).  The design of an environmentally responsive building envelope must be based on energy concepts which enable an interaction between the envelope, the building and the environment. This design task can only be tackled by means of an integrated approach to planning i.e. interdisciplinary collaboration between architects, facade and environmental engineers. In addition to practicing the design of responsive building envelopes by means of integrated planning, visits of built examplesin Switzerland, Italy and Germany will be organized.
